October 30, 2015 — Burley Designs has recalled 34,000 child bicycle trailers because they can detach, posing a crash hazard for the child.
There have been 35 reports of the tow-bar receiver detaching from the tow-bar, including two incidents that resulted in abrasions to a child. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC):
“Trailers with black plastic tow bar receivers can separate from the tow bar when they appear to be connected, posing a crash hazard to the child in the trailer.”
Burley explains that the trailers are connected to the bicycle by a tow-bar. One end of the tow-bar is attached to the rear axle of the bicycle, and the other end is attached to a tow-bar receiver on the trailer.
The recalled trailers have a black plastic tow-bar receiver with an integrated wheel-guard. They were sold from January 2009 through October 2015 for $300-700 at sporting goods stores and online.
Model and serials affected by the recall include:
- Cub: K943
- Rental Cub: K943
- D’Lite and D’Lite ST: D948 and K948
- Encore: K942
- Solo and Solo ST: D939, K939, KK939
Aluminum tow-bar receivers are not included in the recall.
Burley Designs recommends that consumers immediately stop using the recalled bicycle trailers. Contact the company for a free repair kit with tools and instructions for installation. Burley is also offering a 20% off coupon towards the purchase of Burley accessories.
Consumers should also inspect the plastic tow-bar receiver. If it is cracked or damaged, consumers should also request a free replacement receiver.
