What is the problem?
In January 2021, Publix, Pero Family Farms, and Lancaster Foods recalled a variety of products with butternut squash due to possible Listeria monocytogenes bacteria contamination. No illnesses were reported as of January 14.

On January 19, 2021, Lancaster Foods LLC recalled items with butternut squash ingredients due to a risk of Listeria contamination. The products include butternut squash noodles, planks, chunks, and vegetable mixes with butternut squash:

The recalled products were distributed in North Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Publix Steam-In-Bag Butternut Squash Recall
Publix Super Markets recalled certain Steam-In-Bag® products that with butternut squash ingredients due to a risk of Listeria.
The recall includes 3 items that were sold from January 3 through January 14, 2021, including:
- Publix Steam-In-Bag® Green Bean Butternut Squash
- Publix Steam-In-Bag® Season Butternut Medley
- Publix Steam-In-Bag® Butternut Brussel Pecan
Pero Family Farms Butternut Squash Recall
Pero Family Farms Food Company, LLC recalled butternut squash trays due to a risk of Listeria contamination.
The trays are labeled with expiration dates from January 15 through January 20, 2021. The recalled products include:
- Pero Family Farms Butternut Squash Cubed Tray
- Pero Family Farms Butternut Squash Veggie Spirals Tray
Signs & Symptoms of Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive freezing and grow in food that is refrigerated. Food can be contaminated without looking or smelling spoiled.
Eating food that is contaminated by Listeria cause severe food poisoning, and sometimes death.
In healthy adults, symptoms may not appear for up to 90 days. The symptoms may include a fever, severe headache, muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
