How is Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosed?

Pancreatic cancer can only be conclusively diagnosed with a biopsy (tissue sample from the tumor) that is examined under a microscope. Because the pancreas is located deep inside the abdomen, it is rarely diagnosed unless doctors are specifically looking for it. In most cases, patients are only diagnosed after the cancer has spread beyond the pancreas. Once this occurs, it is difficult to treat.

Diagnosing Early Symptoms Improves Prognosis

The long-term outlook is better for patients who have an early diagnosis. Therefore, patients who may be at risk of this disease should be vigilant for symptoms, including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Itching
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin, eyes)
  • Worsening blood-sugar control
  • And more

Medical Tests to Diagnose Pancreatic Cancer

When pancreatic cancer is suspected, doctors may order the following tests to help with diagnosis:

  • Blood tests: Pancreatic cancer produces certain hormones and bio-markers that can be detected in blood tests, but usually only after the cancer has already spread. Individuals with pancreatic cancer may also require frequent blood tests to check the functioning and health of the pancreas and other organs.
  • CT scan: This test involves a series of many X-ray images to create a 3D image of abdominal organs.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): This test creates a 3D image of the abdomen using powerful magnetic waves.
  • Ultrasound: This non-invasive test uses a special wand to emit sound waves that create a picture of the abdomen.
  • Endoscopic ultrasound: This test involves a small ultrasound emitter which is attached to an endoscope (a long, flexible tube that is inserted through a patient’s mouth and into the stomach, near the pancreas). This test is most useful for looking for small tumors on the pancreas.
  • Biopsy: Pancreatic cancer can only be conclusively diagnosed with a tissue sample (biopsy). There are minimally-invasive techniques for obtaining a biopsy that do not involve surgery, but rather a long needle guided to the pancreas with an ultrasound image.
