UPDATE: Harbor Breeze & Honeywell Fans Recalled After 60 Reports of Fans Detaching
In December 2021, about 77,900 Harbor Breeze® 52-inch Belleisle Bay and Honeywell® 52-inch Rio Ceiling Fans were recalled because the blades can detach from the fan while in use and hit people. There were 60 reports of the blades detaching from the fan, including 3 reports of the blades damaging drywall. The fans were sold from February 2018 through August 2021 for about $150.

In December 2020, King of Fans recalled nearly 200,000 ceiling fans from Home Depot after 2 people were hit and injured by fan blades that broke off. The recall involves Hampton Bay® 54″ Mara Indoor/Outdoor Ceiling Fans. There were 47 reports of the fan blades detaching from the fan, 2 people who were hit and injured, and 4 reports of property damage. What is the Problem?
In recent years, hundreds of thousands of ceiling fans have been recalled because they can injure consumers. At least 16 injuries have been linked to broken fan blades and falling glass light globes.
Ceiling Fan Blades Can Break Off
The most common problem is the fan blades breaking and flying off when the fan is in use, which poses a serious injury hazard to anyone standing nearby.
Unfortunately, recalls are sometimes delayed until many people are injured. For example, the Harbor Breeze Santa Ana Ceiling Fan was not recalled until February 2020, after 10 people were injured and there were 210 reports of fan blades breaking off.
Glass Light Globes Can Fall and Hit People Below
Another common problem with ceiling fans is that the light globe can fall of. If the globe is made of glass, people who are hit by the falling object can suffer serious laceration injuries when it breaks. In October 2020, Lowe’s recalled Harbor Breeze Kingsbury Ceiling Fans after 4 people suffered laceration injuries due to glass light globes that fell off.
