Cervical Cancer Screening Scandal in Ireland
Ireland ran a publicly-funded cervical cancer screening program called CervicalCheck, which offered free pap smear tests to women between the ages of 25 and 60. Many of the tests were outsourced to companies such as Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc. When a review in 2014 found inaccurate results, women were not informed.
What is the problem?
There were 208 women who received false-negatives between 2010 and 2014, but the women were not told until recently. At least 17 of them have died. Overall, around 1,400 women developed cervical cancer after previously testing negative in tests from 2010-2014. In the 208 cases, early tests found clear signs of cancer that were missed.
Texas Lab Pays $3 Million Settlement
The scandal came to light after the testing company, Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc. of Austin, Texas, agreed to pay a $3 million settlement to Vicky Phelan, 43, a terminally ill Irish woman.
In 2011, she was given a negative result from Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc. — but a second test in 2014 revealed a diagnosis of cancer, and a review of her previous test strongly indicated cancer.
In January 2018, she was told she had only 6 months to a year to live, according to her lawyer:
“If she had been diagnosed in 2011, there would have been a 95 percent chance of a cure. Instead she is left with what is now an incurable cancer.”
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer starts in tissues at the entrance to the uterus (womb). The cervix is the narrow part of the lower uterus. In the U.S., over 12,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2017, and most cases are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).
Symptoms of Cervical Cancer
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Bleeding after menopause
- Unusual discharge from the vagina
- Pain during sex
- Pan in the pelvis
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Weight loss
