Chicken Salad Sandwiches Recalled for Listeria Risk

October 8, 2019 — Multiple recalls have been issued for pre-made chicken salad sandwiches at Walmart, Target, and other stores due to a risk of Listeria contamination.

The recalls are in response to an outbreak of Listeria in Canada. In the U.S., Tip Top Poultry Inc. recalled all chicken produced from January 21, 2019 through September 24, 2019.

On October 2, Coburn’s Inc. recalled chicken salad products that were distributed and sold at Coborn’s and Cash Wise Stores in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, as well as Marketplace Foods stores in Western Wisconsin.

On October 2, E.A. Sween Company recalled a variety of sandwiches sold at Walmart, Target, and other stores nationwide under the following brand-names:

  • Archer Farms
  • Market Artisan
  • Market Sandwich
  • Deli Express
  • Good to Go
  • Kum & Go

The recall includes chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad, dill egg salad, ranch chicken salad, albacore tuna salad, cranberry almond chicken salad, everything bagels, smoked ham & cheese sub, chicken salad croissants, artisan-style white chicken salad, and turkey havarti.

On October 3, Grand Stand Sandwich recalled specific sell-by dates of Lunch Box® Chicken Salad Wedges (Fresh and Frozen), and Fresh & Local® Chicken Salad Croissants. The products were sold primarily in convenience stores and vending machines in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning infections. Healthy adults may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
