Chicken Taco Kits Recalled After Listeria Outbreak
In February 2024, several brands of chicken taco kits were recalled after a deadly outbreak of Listeria illnesses infected dozens of people.
What Happened?
The recalls involve chicken taco kits with dairy products (such as cheese or crema sauce) that were manufactured by Rizo-Lopez Foods.
Rizo-Lopez Foods recalled all of their dairy products after they were linked to an outbreak of Listeria illnesses that killed 2 people and hospitalized at least 23 other people with severe infections since 2014, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation.
The recalls by Rizo-Lopez Foods caused a chain-reaction of more than a dozen other recalls by companies who used dairy products in their own products. Many of those recalls involved chicken taco kits.
Fresh Creative Foods Recalls Chicken Taco Kits
On February 7, 2024, Fresh Creative Foods recalled Cilantro Lime Crema, Everything Sauce Fiesta, Cilantro Cotija dressing, Poblano Caesar dressing, Cilantro Dressing, and Chicken Street Taco Express Meal Kit due to the risk of Listeria in the cheese ingredient.
The dressings and chicken taco kits were distributed to retailers like Costco, H-E-B, Trader Joe’s and Albertson’s in the following states: CA, CT, FL, ID, IL, MD, MT, NJ, NV, OR, PA, SD, TX, UT, VA, and WA.
Bristol Farms Recalls Chicken Taco Kits
On February 14, 2024, Bristol Farms recalled Chicken Taco Kit (9-oz., Sell-By 1/18/24) because the Chipotle Crema sauce cup may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The chicken taco kit was sold at certain Bristol Farms California retail store locations.
Save Mart, Lucky Recall Chicken Street Taco Kits
On February 9, 2024, The Save Mart Companies Recalled chicken street taco kits due to a risk of Listeria contamination.
They were sold in Save Mart, Lucky, and Lucky California store service delis, as they include a cup of crema sauce containing cotija cheese produced and recalled by Rizo-Lopez Foods.
The Chicken Street Taco Kits were packaged in a plastic container. The product label includes a UPC beginning with “278230” followed by other digits.
Stater Bros. Recalls Chicken Taco Kits
On February 9, 2024, Stater Bros. recalled chicken street taco kits due to a risk of food poisoning with Listeria. The recall involves 768 units of “CHICKEN STREET TACO KIT” with all Sell-Thru dates up to and including February 10, 2024, supplied by Fresh Creative Foods.
The Chicken Street Taco Kit was recalled because it contained a recalled cheese ingredient in the crema cup supplied by Rizo-López Foods, Inc., of Modesto, California. The Chicken Street Taco Kits were available for purchase at all Stater Bros. Markets in California.
