September 17, 2013 — NBC News reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has inspected a Chobani yogurt manufacturing facility in Twin Falls, Idaho, but they have not issued any warning letters. The facility was implicated in a massive Chobani yogurt recall earlier this month, after customers reported yogurt containers that were bloated, swollen, and “unnervingly fizzy.”
Over 223 people have reported food poisoning to the FDA. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
The FDA has been overseeing Chobani’s response to the problem. In August, the company quietly asked stores to remove the products from shelves. They announced the problem on August 31, but initially resisted calling their actions a recall. An official recall was not announced until September 5, and the mold was not named until September 6.
FDA inspectors apparently found no major violations of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) when they inspected the Twin Falls facility. If problems are found, they are usually documented in a “483 letter.” FDA inspectors may have also discussed problems with the facility’s management instead of issuing a letter.
Chobani detected Mucor circinelloides in samples of recalled yogurt. The company stated that the mold is unlikely to cause food poisoning in most people, and the recall was not issued due to concerns about food safety.
