What is the problem?
The energy bars contain sunflower seeds were recalled by SunOpta, a major nationwide supplier. There have been no reports of illness. However, Listeria can cause severe and sometimes fatal food poisoning.

Sunflower Seed Recalls
SunOpta issued the first recall on May 4 for a limited number of sunflower seeds produced in February. On June 2, SunOpta expanded the recall to include another eight months of production.
These recalls set off a chain reaction, and now well over 100 products have been recalled — including bulk sunflower seeds, trail mix, salad kits, snack packs, and granola bars made by General Mills, Kashi, Kellogg, and Quaker Oats, and more. Grocery stores like Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Albertson’s, and Safeway have also recalled a variety of products.
Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Unlike most bacteria, Listeria survives freezing and grows in the refrigerator.
It can take up to two months (3 to 70 days) before symptoms appear. In healthy adults, these symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
The infection is usually more serious in young children, older adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems. The FDA also warns about the risk in pregnant women:
“Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
