Concerta and Suicide

Concerta (methylphenidate) is an extended-release medication for kids with ADHD. One of its most serious side effects is new or worsening psychiatric problems, especially in young patients.

The label (PDF) warns that in clinical trials, 4% of patients experienced depressed mood and nearly 2% developed depression. Withdrawal from Concerta can also cause extreme depression.

These side effects, in combination with impulsiveness from ADHD, may increase the risk of suicide — especially patients who are young, impulsive, or have underlying psychiatric problems.

The FDA has been investigating the risk of suicide from Concerta since 2005, which was when one safety reviewer told NBC News:

“Stimulant drugs may exacerbate symptoms and reveal them for the first time in children with previously unrecognized psychiatric illnesses.”

Health Canada Strengthens Suicide Warnings for Concerta

In March 2015, Health Canada added stronger, clearer warnings about suicide to the label on Concerta and other methylphenidate ADHD medications. The warnings were based on reports of suicidal behaviors and deaths.

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, instead of a Concerta class action, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of people who experienced suicidal behavior or committed suicide after taking Concerta.

About Class Actions

Class action lawsuits are designed to help a large group of people seek compensation for very similar legal claims. If compensation is awarded to the “class representative,” everyone in the class action shares the payout equally.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Concerta is associated with many serious side effects, but each case is unique. Some victims have far more serious injuries than others. This is why each case needs to be handled individually.

Rather than a class action, our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits. We specialize in helping victims of defective drugs seek compensation for their injury, medical expenses, and more.
