Costco, Meijer Recall Frozen Corn and Peas for Listeria Risk

April 25, 2016 — A recall has been issued for frozen green peas, sweet corn, and vegetables produced by CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington and sold at grocery stores like Costco and Meijer.

The products may be contaminated with Listeria, a bacteria that can cause severe and sometimes fatal food poisoning. The problem was discovered by health officials in Ohio when a sample of sweet corn and another sample of peas tested positive.

The products were distributed from September 13, 2015 until March 16, 2016 in the following states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, LA, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NV, NH, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI. According to the FDA, they may have been redistributed in other states nationwide.

Recalled frozen vegetable products include:

  • True Goodness by Meijer Organic Petite Green Peas
  • True Goodness by Meijer Organic White Sweet Corn
  • Wellsley Farms Organic Mixed Vegetables
  • Wellsley Farms Organic Green Peas
  • Organic by Nature Green Peas
  • Organic by Nature Vegetable Medley w/ Shelled Edamame
  • Organic by Nature White Supersweet Corn
  • Schwan’s Orgnic SS Yellow & White Cut Corn

This is the second frozen food recall in the past month. On April 11, Pictsweet recalled frozen vegetable blends that may include Listeria-tainted onions. The onions were also sold in dozens of ready-made deli-style salads by Reser’s Fine Foods Inc.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal problems. In rare cases, the infection spreads to the brain or bloodstream and causes meningitis or sepsis.

Listeriosis is a very serious infection for older adults, young children, and pregnant women. According to the CDC:

“Pregnant women typically experience fever and other non-specific symptoms, such as fatigue and aches. However, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.”
