September 1, 2021 — A pressure cooker lawsuit has been filed by a man who was seriously burned when his Crock-Pot Express Crock Pressure Cooker exploded.
The lawsuit accuses Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands of selling a defective product with unreasonably dangerous safety hazards.
The plaintiff, Ralph B. Jr., is a man from South Carolina who claims he was injured by a defective Crock-Pot Pressure Cooker (Model Number SCCPPC600-V 1) that he received new in December 2018.
He claims that he was seriously injured by the pressure cooker on November 17, 2019, when he was using it to prepare a meal.
According to the lawsuit, the pressure cooker “indicated it had finished cooking the meal and was no longer under pressure, and that it was safe to open or otherwise operate.”
That was when “it suddenly and without warning exploded, causing scalding hot liquid, contents, and steam to fly out of the Pressure Cooker” and onto his body, resulting in “severely painful and disfiguring burns,” as well as mental anguish, lost wages, and medical expenses.
About a year after he was injured, Sunbeam Products recalled nearly 1 million Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cookers after 99 people reported burn injuries when the lid detached during cooking and exploded hot food and steam onto unsuspecting consumers.
His lawsuit was filed on August 2, 2021 against Sunbeam Products Inc. (doing business as Jarden Consumer Solutions) and Newell Brands Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina (Charleston Division) — Case Number 2:21-cv-02404-DCN
