The Crux vena cava filter is a temporary IVC filter made by Volcano Corporation. Unfortunately, side effects fracture and migration become more likely the longer it remains implanted in a patient.

Volcano Crux Vena Cava Filter
The Crux is an IVC filter that is implanted in the inferior vena cava (IVC) to prevent pulmonary embolisms. It has a unique double-helix design that is supposed to reduce the risk of pieces breaking off or perforating organs.
Manufacturer Studying Safety Risks
Because it is a short-term implant, the long-term risks are unknown. The manufacturer began studying these risks in a 5-year study that began in early 2015 — the PRESERVE clinical trial. In the meantime, Volcano Corp. warns about the following serious side effects:
- Filter fracture
- Migration of the filter in the body (embolization)
- Arrhythmia
- Back or abdominal pain
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Hemorrhage (internal bleeding) and hematoma
- Organ damage or nerve damage
- Kidney damage
- Perforation of the vena cava
- Obstruction of blood circulation
- Death
Hundreds of Individual Lawsuits Centralized in Federal Court
Hundreds of IVC filter lawsuits against C.R. Bard and Cook Medical have been centralized in federal court. However, these cases are not part of a class action — they are individual lawsuits that are coordinated in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in Arizona and Indiana.
What is the problem?
The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our attorneys are not filing an IVC filter class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits.
About Class Actions
A class action is a good way to resolve a lot of legal claims all at once. Everyone consolidates their individual claims into one lawsuit. Lawyers fight for compensation on behalf of the entire group and members share any payout equally.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Class actions can have disadvantages, especially for people with very serious injuries. In some cases, lawyers charge massive fees and leave little remaining for everyone in the lawsuit to share. In other cases, members must accept a “low-ball” settlement.
Instead of a class action, our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits. We provide personal legal representation to victims of defective medical devices. We specialize in maximizing compensation and seeking justice from device-makers who fail to warn about side effects.
