What Happened?

In March 2020, ADT was contacted by a customer in DeSoto, Texas, who reported an unauthorized emails on their ADT Pulse app account. When ADT investigated, they discovered that a service technician had added his personal email address to 220 customers’ accounts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for 7 years, from 2013 to 2020.

What Could the Employee Do?

The service technician was able to log in to customers’ accounts and watch live video streams from cameras, as well as recorded video. He also had the ability to download images and video and post it online, according to lawsuits:

“Moments once believed to be private and inside the sanctity of the home are now voyeuristic entertainment for a third party. And worse, those moments could have been captured, shared with others, or even posted to the internet.”

ADT Lawsuits for Dallas Security Breach

One lawsuit (PDF) alleges that he spied on a teenage girl and her family nearly 100 times. The lawsuit was filed on May 18 in Florida, where ADT his headquartered. Case No. 0:20-cv-60971-RAR.

Another lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a woman who claims the employee spied on her, her husband, and young son “in their most private moments.” — Case No. 0:20-cv-60972-RKA.

How Did ADT Respond?

This type of remote access was not necessary for service, and against ADT’s rules. As soon as ADT discovered the breach, they revoked his access, terminated the employee, and contacted law enforcement.

ADT Notifies 220 Customers in Dallas of Security Breach

On April 23, ADT contacted 220 customers in Dallas who were victims of this invasion of privacy to report the security breach. A few weeks later, ADT was hit with two class action lawsuits in Florida.

ADT Pays $16 Million Class Action Settlement

The class action lawsuits accuse ADT of failing to properly monitor customers’ accounts for unwanted invaders. In 2017, ADT paid $16 million in class action lawsuit settlements in Illinois, Florida and California. The lawsuits accused ADT of failing to encrypt security systems, which gives hackers easy access to security cameras.
