Deli Ham Recall

In October 2018, Johnston County Hams Inc., of Smithfield, North Carolina, recalled nearly 90,000 pounds of ready-to-eat deli ham due to Listeria contamination.

Ham Recall Linked to 4 Illnesses, 1 Death

Investigators with the USDA confirmed that 4 people were infected with Listeria after eating the recalled deli ham, including 1 person who died, from July 8, 2017 through August 11, 2018.

Investigation of Listeria Outbreak

Investigators collected 2 samples of deli ham from Johnston County Hams in 2016 and in early 2018. Both tested positive for Listeria. Tests showed that Listeria found in the deli ham in both years was matched genetically to Listeria from the ill people.

Listeria Food Poisoning

Listeria infections can take up to 2 months to cause symptoms. The symptoms of an infection may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Listeria infections in pregnant women can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or deadly infection of the newborn.

Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.
