Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed for Liquid Laxative Infection

October 2017 — PharmaTech LLC has been hit with a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of a 2 year-old girl who developed an infection after being given Diocto Liquid laxative. The FDA has also issued an update to report that — yet again — laboratory findings found B. cepacia, bacteria, yeast, and mold in Rugby Diocto Liquid Laxative. Click here to read more.

Diocto Liquid Recalled Again – More Infections Reported

August 2017 — Rugby Laboratories has issued yet another recall for Diocto Liquid Stool Softener and Diocto Syrup after more bacterial infections with B. cepacia were reported. According to the FDA warning:

“If a product contains B. cepacia, its use could result in infections in patients with compromised immune systems and in patients with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis.”

What is Diocto?

Diocto Liquid Stool Softener is a docusate sodium laxative that is made by PharmaTech, LLC. Until recently, it was commonly given to relieve constipation in hospitalized patients or those with serious illnesses.

Diocto Liquid Recall Issued for Infection Risk

In July 2016, PharmaTech issued a recall for Rugby®-brand Diocto Liquid due to the risk of infections with B. cepacia. An unopened bottle tested positive for the bacteria and the FDA received several adverse event reports.

How Many People Were Infected?

There have been 60 infections in 8 states confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as of August 10, 2016. The CDC and FDA are asking doctors and patients not to use any liquid docusate sodium product as a laxative or for any other medical purpose.

B. Cepacia Infections Resist Antibiotic Treatment

Burkholderia cepacia, also known as “B. cepacia complex,” is a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. The bacteria is innately antibiotic-resistant and can acquire resistance, which makes treatment very challenging. Infections in healthy adults are rare, but they have a 42% mortality rate. The risk is greatest for people with vulnerable immune systems, especially cystic fibrosis patients.

PharmaTech Recalls All Liquid Products

In August 2016, PharmaTech recalled all liquid products due to B. cepacia. The products were sold under six brand-names — Rugby, Major, Bayshore, Metron, Centurion, and Virtus — from October 20, 2015 through July 15, 2016.
