August 4, 2017 — Rugby Laboratories has issued yet another recall for Diocto Liquid Stool Softener after more bacterial infections were reported.
Yesterday, Rugby recalled all lots of Diocto Liquid and Diocto Syrup (docusate sodium) laxatives made by PharmaTech, LLC after the FDA reported several infections with B. cepacia.
Exactly one year ago, Rugby recalled all lots of Diocto Liquid in after an outbreak of 60 infections with B. cepacia in 8 states. Two unopened bottles tested positive. Investigators traced the outbreak to contaminated water at PharmaTech.
Diocto Liquid returned to hospitals by October 2016, less than a month after the first recall. This time, the FDA is specifically warning that patients with underlying illnesses have the highest risk:
“If a product contains B. cepacia, its use could result in infections in patients with compromised immune systems and in patients with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis.”
Diocto Liquid (docusate sodium) is a laxative that contains docusate sodium. It is primarily given to hospitalized patients who are recovering from a heart attack or surgery, when straining to have a bowel movement would be dangerous. Diocto is also used in patients with serious illnesses who must use mechanical ventilators.
Infections with B. cepacia are rare for healthy adults, but they have a 42% risk of death. The problem is that B. cepacia is naturally antibiotic-resistant. Another problem is the B. cepacia is widespread in the environment, especially in water and soil.
