Dole Recalls All Salads

January 2015 — The FDA has announced a recall for all pre-packaged salads sold by Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. due to Listeria contamination.

How Many People Were Sickened?

The outbreak has sickened at least 15 people in eight states since July 5, 2015, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). All of the victims were hospitalized, including one person from Michigan who died of listeriosis.

Pregnant Women Who Ate Salads Should Seek Medical Attention

One of the outbreaks was a pregnant woman. Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and serious illness or death in newborn babies. The FDA recommends that pregnant women who ate the salads should seek medical attention and tell their doctor.

What Products Were Recalled?

Dole is recalling all packaged salads made at a plant in Springfield, Ohio. They were sold in plastic bags and hard clamshell boxes under the following brands:

  • Dole
  • Fresh Selections
  • Simple Truth
  • Marketside
  • The Little Salad Bar
  • President’s Choice Organics

Laboratory tests confirmed that the strain of Listeria is highly genetically related, which means it probably came from the same source.

These brands include a wide variety of salads, including Caesar, BBQ ranch, arugula, coleslaw, iceberg, lettuce, kale, romaine, sesame ginger, spinach salads, and more. They can be identified by a manufacturing code that begins with the letter “A.”

Listeria Food Poisoning

Eating food contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious type of food poisoning known as listeriosis. The symptom can appear within a few days, but may take several months (up to 70 days). Most people experience fever, muscle aches, and chills, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
