January 29, 2016 — A deadly outbreak of Listeria has prompted Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. to recall all pre-packaged salad mixes and boxes made at a facility in Springfield, Ohio.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported 15 illnesses in eight states since July 5, 2015. All of the victims were hospitalized and one person died of listeriosis.
Case Count by State: Connecticut (1), Indiana (1), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (4), Missouri (1), New Jersey (1), New York (5), and Pennsylvania (1).
Brands of salad mixes included in the recall:
- Dole
- Fresh Selections
- Simple Truth
- Marketside
- The Little Salad Bar
- President’s Choice Organics
The products were sold in plastic bags or clamshell boxes. They can be identified by the letter “A” at the beginning of the manufacturing code.
A wide variety of pre-packaged salads are being recalled, including arugula, bacon and bleu cheese, caesar, BBQ ranch, coleslaw, iceberg lettuce, kale, romaine, sesame ginger, spinach, vegetable blends, and more.
The outbreak has been under investigation since September 2015. Laboratory tests did not confirm the presence of Listeria in Dole salads until January 2016. Dole stopped all production on January 21 and recalled all of the salads on January 27.
Eating food contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a rare but serious type of food poisoning. The most common symptoms include high fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal symptoms. It can take anywhere from 2 days to two months (70 days) for symptoms to appear.
