EFP Attacks: Do I Qualify for Compensation?

U.S. veterans who were injured or had PTSD after being attacked by EFP roadside bombs in Iraq or Afghanistan may qualify to seek compensation from the Anti-Terrorism Litigation Fund, which is also known as The U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund (USVSST)

What is the Anti-Terrorism Litigation Fund?

The USVSST Fund has paid out over $6 billion to victims of terrorism — including 9/11 victims and their families, other terrorist attack victims, and veterans who were injured in attacks involving IED / EFP / and other weapons that were manufactured or financed by international state-sponsored terrorists.

Eligibility for Seeking EFP Fund Compensation

You may qualify to seek compensation if you:

  • Served in Iraq from 2004-present, or Afghanistan from 2006-present
  • Were involved in an IED / EFP attack with a specific attack date (you need to know the date or have the information available)
  • You suffered an injury in the attack where:
    • You needed medical treatment for a physical injury; OR
    • You were diagnosed with PTSD due to the attack

What is an EFP?

An Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) is an Iranian-designed roadside bomb that was commonly used by terrorists to attack armored vehicles and M1 Abrams tanks in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What Happens in an EFP Attack?

EFPs look like a coffee can, but they were packed with explosives that could shoot out a jet of molten copper at 2,000-meters per second, penetrating through a vehicle’s armor.

The copper projectile will slice through whatever it hits, often amputating the legs and feet of the vehicle’s driver or any other troops inside. These bloody EFP attacks were often followed by an ambush, adding to the terror during convoys.

Because EFPs can travel a long distance, they would be hidden far away from the roadside and triggered remotely. EFPs were one of the most feared terrorist weapons used against U.S. troops because they were so lethal.

EFP Attacks Caused 1,000+ Injuries and Deaths

At least 196 U.S. troops died and 900 were wounded by EFPs between 2005 and 2011, defense officials revealed in 2015, according to the Seattle Times. Today, many survivors have PTSD because these EFP attacks were so horrific, bloody and deadly.

Types of EFP Injuries

Hundreds of U.S. troops suffered gruesome leg and foot amputations, died of catastrophic bleeding, or suffered PTSD and other devastating mental health problems after being hit by EFPs in Iraq or Afghanistan. These severe injuries included:

  • Amputations
  • Bilateral leg and foot amputations
  • Bleeding
  • Burn injuries
  • Genital damage (loss of sexual function, lifelong urinary incontinence, etc.)
  • Concussions
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Mental health problems
  • Disability
  • Death
