Enfamil ProSobee Recalled for Deadly Infection Risk

In February 2023, Reckitt recalled 145,000 cans of Enfamil ProSobee Plant-Based Infant Formula due to a risk of infections.

What is the Problem?

The recalled batches of Enfamil ProSobee may have been cross-contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii, a bacteria that can cause severe, life-threatening infections in babies.

Did Any Babies Get Sick?

No illnesses or infections with Cronobacter were reported by Reckitt as of February 19, 2023. However, the recall warns that “Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections (sepsis) or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine).”

Cronobacter Infection Symptoms To Watch Out For

In infants, a Cronobacter infection can cause symptoms in as little as 6-8 hours, but it can take longer in some cases. Infants may have a fever, poor feeding, excessive crying, very low energy, or sometimes seizures.

The recall also warns about the following symptoms:

“Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths and abnormal movements. Cronobacter infection may also cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.”

Was My Baby Formula Recalled?

The recall involves 12.9-ounce cans of Enfamil ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula with product batches ZL2HZF or ZL2HZZ, and with a UPC Code of 300871214415 and a Use-By Date of “1 Mar 2024.” It was sold nationwide in the U.S., Guam, and Puerto Rico.

What is Enfamil ProSobee?

Enfamil ProSobee Plant-Based Infant Formula is a powdered baby formula that is manufactured by Reckitt for babies 0-12 months. It is a non-dairy, lactose-free infant formula that is advertised for babies with “sensitive tummies.” Reckitt claims that the plant-based ingredients “ease fussiness & gas caused by sensitivity to milk.”

What is Cronobacter?

Cronobacter sakazakii is a type of bacteria that is found widely in the environment. Infections with Cronobacter are often very serious for babies and they can die. Some of the most serious complications of Cronobacter infections in infants include:

  • Neonatal meningitis (inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord)
  • Sepsis (bloodstream infection)
  • Necrotizing Enterocolitis (infection of the intestines)
  • Death

Problems With Cronobacter in Baby Formula

Cronobacter sakazakii can survive in very dry foods, which is why contamination is a persistent problem for powdered baby formula. In February 2022, a deadly outbreak of Cronobacter infections led to a massive recall for Similac baby formula, with 4 reported illnesses and 2 deaths.

Baby Formula is Not Sterile

Another problem is that powdered baby formula is not sterile, because while it is heat-treated during processing, it is not subjected to high enough temperatures for sufficient time to kill Cronobacter and other types of bacteria that could cause serious illnesses in babies.

How Does Bacteria Get Into Baby Formula?

There are also many steps where bacteria can get into powdered baby formula. The original ingredients could be contaminated, or the product could be contaminated during processing, packaging, or after the can is opened by the consumer. When babies get sick because of a manufacturing error, parents may be able to file lawsuits or join a class action.
