Cronobacter and Baby Formula

Cronobacter sakazakii is a bacteria that is common in the environment. It can survive in very dry foods, including powdered infant formula. Infections are not usually very serious for healthy adults, but they can be life-threatening for young infants.

In 2022, a massive amount of powdered baby formula was recalled after a deadly outbreak of Cronobacter infections and babies. Other recalls have been issued due to problems with Cronobacter contamination. The first recall involved Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare.
