Problems With Exactech Connexion GXL Liners

Exactech implant failures with a Connexion GXL liner have been reported to occur between 3 and 6 years after the initial implant surgery. This is far worse than the industry standard for hip implants, which are supposed to last 10 to 20 years before needing revision.

Nearly 90,000 Hip Implant Patients Received GXL Liners

Unfortunately, almost 90,000 patients were implanted with Connexion GXL liners before it was removed from the U.S. market in 2019, and replaced with a new hip implant product called the XLE liner.

Have Lawsuits Been Filed?

Yes. Lawsuits are now trying to determine just how long Exactech knew about problems with GXL liners before warning patients and pulling it off the market. Angry patients are also seeking compensation for their pain and suffering, medical bills, and more.

How Long Did Exactech Know About the Problem?

It was not until June 2021 that Exactech issued an Urgent Letter to warn orthopedic surgeons about high failure rates. By then, experts had been warning about patients needing surgery due to “severe polyethylene wear and osteolysis” within 5 years of the initial surgery.

Studies Link Exactech GXL Liner With Early Failure Rates

In fact, Exactech’s safety warning came more than 1 year after multiple studies were published in the medical literature concerning high failure rates of the Connexion GXL Liner:

GXL liners were designed to be use with these hip implant systems:

  • Exactech Novation
  • Exactech Accumatch
  • Exactech MCS

Will I need Surgery?

Not all patients who were implanted with the Exactech GXL liner will need another hip surgery. However, patients who are experiencing symptoms of excessive wear on their hip implant will likely need a revision surgery to replace the GXL liner (or the entire hip implant).

Symptoms of Hip Implant Failure

  • Pain
  • Bone tissue is destroyed (osteolysis)
  • Loose or unstable hip
  • Unable to put weight on the hip
  • Problems walking
  • Swelling or inflammation
  • Falls

Other Problems With Exactech Implants

Exactech Connexion GXL liners are made with ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) plastic. The plastic liner has some advantages, but it also degrades very quickly when exposed to oxygen.

In early 2022, Exactech recalled more than 147,000 Optetrak, Logic and Truliant knee implants because they contain a similar plastic insert that can wear out and fail prematurely due to oxidization issues.
