Velocity Eye Drops Recalled for Infection Risk
In October 2023, the FDA warned consumers to immediately stop using dozens of over-the-counter eye drops due to a risk of eye infections that could result in partial vision loss or permanent blindness.
What Eye Drops Were Recalled?
The list of eye drops included several products manufactured by Velocity Pharma LLC, including Lubricant Eye Drop 10-ml (triple pack).
The product was also labeled as Velocity Pharma® Lubricant Eye Drops (Propylene Glycol 0.6%) with NDC 76168-502-30.
What Happened?
Dozens of eye drop products were recalled after FDA inspectors visited the manufacturing facility and found “insanitary conditions,” and positive bacterial tests in critical drug production areas of the facility.
The FDA immediately issued a warning because eye drops are applied directly to the eyes, making them higher risk than many other over-the-counter products.
The recall includes eye drops sold by CVS, Rite Aid, Target, Walmart, and other stores, including online and international markets such as the British Virgin Islands.
What Should I Do?
Anyone who used these recalled eye drops should seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms of an eye infection.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the symptoms of an eye infection may include:
- Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
- Eye pain or discomfort
- Redness of the eye or eyelid
- Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
