Earth Grown Falafel Recalled After E. coli Outbreak

In October 2022, an E. coli outbreak was linked to Earth Grown Vegan Frozen Falafel from ALDI stores in dozens of states.

ALDI said it “immediately removed the affected products from all stores in the U.S.” after being notified of the recall by its supplier, Cuisine Innovations Unlimited LLC.

The recall includes the following falafel products:

  • Earth Grown® Vegan Traditional Falafels (12 oz. box) — UPC 4099100224337 — All Lot Codes
  • Earth Grown® Vegan Garlic & Herb Falafels (12 oz. box) — UPC 4099100224344 — All Lot Codes

How Many People Got Sick?

Earth Grown Frozen Falafel from ALDI has been linked to 20 E. coli illnesses in 6 states since July 2022. The states include Florida (2), Iowa (1), Kansas (1), Michigan (11), Ohio (1), and Wisconsin (4), according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

Five people were hospitalized with severe food poisoning symptoms. The illnesses began on dates ranging from July 24, 2022 through September 19, 2022, according to the CDC.

What Falafel Products Were Recalled from ALDI?

The recall includes boxes of Earth Grown Frozen Falafel in two flavors (Traditional and Garlic & Herb) with any of the following lot numbers: 1472, 1481, 1531, 1532, 1541, 1552, 1561, 1581, 1601, 1611, 1612, 1661, 1682, 1732, 1752, 1762, 1782, 1802, or 1812.

What is the Problem?

The recalled falafel may be contaminated by Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Infections with this dangerous strain of E. coli can cause severe food poisoning within 1 to 10 days of eating the contaminated food.

Symptoms of an E. coli Infection

The symptoms of an E. coli infection may include severe diarrhea (loose stool/poop that may be bloody), stomach cramps, and vomiting. Infections sometimes cause a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) or other complications.
