March 15, 2019 — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against a California-based kratom powder manufacturer, Socal Herbal Remedies LLC.
The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the family of Caleb Sturgis, a 25 year-old man who died of an apparent heart attack while he was driving to work in June 2018.
Medical tests revealed that Caleb had large amounts of kratom in his body when he died. The coroner listed his cause of death as “kratom intoxication.” His family confirmed that he had been using kratom for years.
In a lawsuit against Socal Herbal Remedies, lawyers for the family accuse the company of failing to warn about the potentially deadly health risks of using kratom.
The kratom product that Caleb purchased from Socal had no warnings about side effects, or instructions for proper dosage, according to an attorney representing the family.
Kratom supplements are primarily used for anxiety, pain, depression, and alleviating the symptoms of opioid withdrawal.
The FDA has linked dozens of deaths to kratom in recent years. The agency has warned that kratom also carries a risk of addiction and abuse. Even so, the agency has not restricted sales of kratom.
The lawsuit is In RE: Scott Sturgis v. Socal Herbal Remedies LLC —Case No. 190102001 filed in the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia County.
