June 2019 — The FDA issued warning letters to 2 companies selling kratom products – Cali Botanicals of Folsom, California, and Kratom NC of Wilmington, North Carolina – for illegally selling unapproved kratom products with unproven claims about their ability to treat or cure opioid addiction, withdrawal, depression, anxiety, and cancer.

What is Kratom?
The plant Mitragyna speciosa, commonly known as kratom, grows naturally in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, where it has been used medicinally for hundreds of years.
Kratom for Opioid Withdrawal
In the U.S., kratom is known as the “opioid withdrawal plant” for its ability to lessen the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Kratom acts on the same opioid receptors in the brain as morphine. Like morphine, using kratom may lead addiction, abuse, and death.
What are the Effects of Kratom?
The effects of kratom change depending on the dosage:
- Low doses (under 5 g) — Kratom has stimulant effects and makes users feel more energetic.
- Moderate doses (5-15 g) — Kratom can reduce pain and may cause a feeling of euphoria, drowsiness, cough suppression, and reduction in symptoms of opioid withdrawal.
- High doses (15 g and up) — Kratom has sedative effects that can be dangerous, with an increased risk of liver damage, seizure, loss of consciousness, and death.

Kratom Death Lawsuit Filed in Pennsylvania
In March 2019, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against a California-based kratom powder manufacturer, Socal Herbal Remedies LLC, by the family of a 25 year-old man who died of “kratom intoxication.”

Kratom Recalled for Salmonella Risk
Dozens of kratom supplements have been recalled after an outbreak of Salmonella sickened at least 132 people in 38 states. Kratom also carries risks of abuse, addiction, and death. In April 2018, the FDA ordered a mandatory kratom recall after at least 37 different kratom supplements tested positive for Salmonella.
Sunstone Organics Recalls Kratom for Salmonella
In March 2019, Sunstone Organics recalled certain kratom powders and capsules because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, including White Vein Kratom Lot 119 and Maeng Da Kratom Lot 124A.
