August 12, 2014 — Two dietary supplements marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction have been found to contain dangerous hidden ingredients, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA also warns about a growing trend of hidden ingredients in supplements, especially those marketed for male sexual enhancement. Because the FDA cannot test every supplement on the market, buyers should be cautious when purchasing these products.
Arize was found to contain sulfoaildenafil, a pharmaceutical drug with a similar chemical structure as the active ingredient in Viagra (sildenafil). The problem is that erectile dysfunction often afflicts men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Men with these conditions often take medications containing nitrates, which can interact with the ingredients in Arize and cause dangerously low blood pressure.
Herbal Vigor Quick Fix
Herbal Vigor Quick Fix was found to contain the active ingredient in Cialis (tadalafil). The FDA warned:
“This undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.”
The FDA asks consumers who have purchased this product to stop using it and throw it away immediately. Report any negative side effects to your doctor as soon as possible.
