Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Glide Soother Recalled After 4 Deaths
On June 4, 2021, Fisher-Price recalled around 120,000 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soothers after 4 young infants tragically suffocated to death when they were put in the seat unrestrained, and later found face-down on their stomachs. The recalled Rock ‘n Glide Soothers were sold nationwide from January 2014 through December 2020 for about $108.
Fisher-Price Soothe ‘n Play Glider Recall
Fisher-Price also recalled about 55,000 2-in-1 Soothe ‘n Play Gliders due to its similarity to the Rock ‘n Glide Soother, although no deaths were reported. The gliders sold nationwide from November 2018 through May 2021 for about $125.
What Happened?
Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Glide Soothers and Sooth ‘n Play Gliders both have a battery-powered inclined seat or rocking chair, which rocks the baby in a head-to-toe or side-to-side motion.
Between April 2019 and February 2020, at least four young infants suffocated in the Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soothers. The infants were not restrained in the seats, and were later found on their stomach with their face pressed into the fabric. Three of the infants who died were too young to roll over independently.
The babies who died include a 4-month old from Missouri, a 2-month old from Nevada, a 2-month old from Michigan, and an 11-week old from Colorado.
Major New Safety Standard Effectively Bans Inclined Sleepers, Rockers, Gliders & Swings
On June 3, a day before the recall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a major new federal safety standard for infant sleep products that will effectively ban these types of dangerous inclined sleep products from the market, including all types of inclined sleepers, rockers, gliders, soothers, and swings.
In the recall notice, CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler said:
“These types of incidents are heart-breaking. Loving parents put their babies in these products never expecting a tragedy. Inclined products, such as gliders, soothers, rockers and swings are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation.”
