Fresh & Ready Foods Recalled After 10 People Hospitalized
In May 2025, Fresh & Ready Foods LLC announced a recall for sandwiches and snacks due to a risk of food poisoning with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The sandwiches and snacks were linked to an outbreak of Listeria that hospitalized at least 10 people
What Happened?
Health officials began investigating a cluster of illnesses in 6 people who were infected with Listeria after eating food at hospitals in 2024, but the FDA said there “was not enough evidence in the previous investigation to identify a source for the outbreak.”
The FDA re-opened the investigation after an inspection at Fresh & Ready Foods LLC discovered Listeria in the facility. Further testing matched the strain of Listeria to the strain that made people sick. In response, a recall was issued by Fresh & Ready Foods.
Fresh & Ready Foods Recalls Sandwiches and Snacks for Listeria Risk
On May 10, 2025, Fresh & Ready Foods announced a recall for sandwiches and snack items that were distributed in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington in April 2025 due to a risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses were linked to the recalled products, but the items could be contaminated with Listeria.
Where Were These Foods Sold?
The recall involves a wide variety of ready-to-eat foods that do not require any additional cooking or preparation. These foods were sold in hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports, airlines, and other retailers.
How Many People Got Sick?
According to the CDC Outbreak Investigation, 10 illnesses were reported (8 in California and 2 illnesses in Nevada). All of the victims were hospitalized. The most recent illness was confirmed in January 2024, but the true number of illnesses may be higher.
What Should I Do?
Listeria infections can be serious or even deadly, especially for high-risk people, including pregnant women and newborns, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
The FDA urges anyone who ate these recalled foods, sandwiches and snacks to contact a healthcare professional if they develop symptoms like fever, nausea, muscle aches, vomiting or diarrhea.
What Are Symptoms of Listeria?
Infections with Listeria are an uncommon type of food poisoning, but they can be invasive and spread beyond the digestive system to other parts of the body. According to the FDA:
“Symptoms usually start within two weeks of eating food contaminated with Listeria but may start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after. Mild symptoms may include a fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.”
