Diabetes and Kidney Disease

The kidneys are two organs that contain million of tiny blood vessels that filter the blood, remove toxins, and balance the amount of fluid in the body. Extra water and toxins are excreted from the body in urine.

Over time, excess sugar in the blood damages the kidneys of people with diabetes and toxins begin to build up in the body. This is called diabetic nephropathy. When the kidneys lose 85-90% of their function, most patients must undergo dialysis to treat kidney failure.

What is the problem?

Because diabetes is a risk-factor for kidney problems, patients must carefully consider the risks and benefits of any mediation with kidney side effects. The problem is that Glyxambi relies on the kidneys to work — it forces the kidneys to remove excess sugar from the body in urine.

Can I Use Glyxambi If I Have Kidney Problems?

According to the Prescribing Information (PDF) for Glyxambi, kidney function should be tested before and during treatment. People with pre-existing kidney problems, moderate renal impairment, and elderly patients have a higher risk of developing kidney side effects from Glyxambi.

Glyxambi and Kidney Infections

About 12% of patients develop urinary tract infections, according to clinical trial data. Infections from Glyxambi can spread to the kidneys or bloodstream and cause kidney failure, according to warnings issued by the FDA.

Infections can cause kidney failure in several ways. Bloodstream infections (also known as urosepsis) can cause a whole-body reaction that suddenly cuts off blood-flow to the kidneys, resulting in acute kidney failure. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can occur when infections cause permanent scarring in the kidneys.

Dehydration and Kidney Failure

Dehydration is one of the most common side effects of Glyxambi. It occurs when patients lose too much water and salt due to excessive urination. When the body does not have enough water, the amount of blood decreases and blood pressure drops. This makes it harder for the kidneys to function, resulting in kidney impairment.

Complications of Kidney Disease

  • Toxins build up in the bloodstream
  • Constantly feeling sick and tired
  • High blood pressure
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Weak bones
  • Poor nutritional health
  • Nerve damage
  • Higher risk of heart and blood vessel disease
