GM Tire Jack Recall

In June 2021, GM recalled about 135,400 emergency spare tire jacks for the Buick Encore GX (2020-2022 model years) and Chevrolet Trailblazer (2021-2022 model-years) due to a serious injury hazard.

What is the Problem?

The tire jacks can fracture and break during use if they are not positioned properly. The jacks are made of plastic that is not strong enough to hold the weight of a lifted vehicle if it is not placed on the frame of the vehicle, exactly as directed in the owners’ manual.

What is the Risk?

If the recalled jacks break during use, a lifted vehicle can fall on anyone who is changing a tire under the vehicle or nearby. This could result in severe injuries and/or death.

Was Anyone Injured by the Recalled Tire Jacks?

In March 2021, a GM test driver reported that the emergency tire jack broke during use during a durability test. GM investigated and found that the jack had not been positioned properly. Upon further investigation, GM found 21 more complaints about the jacks failing.

What Should I Do?

GM will notify owners in July 2021 and dealers will provide a replacement tire jack that is made of metal rather than plastic.
