Costco Green Tea Fat Burner

Liver Damage From Supplements Is on the Rise

A new study has found that green-tea extract pills pose a particular risk of liver damage. In the Hepatology study, products listing green tea extract—either as a single ingredient or as part of a blend—contributed to liver damage in 24 of the 130 cases linked to dietary supplements. Other research suggests that up to 10% of people who suffer acute liver failure from green tea extract may die as a result, the researchers said.

$2.65 Million Settlement in Green Tea Fat Burner Lawsuit

Irwin Naturals, Inc., the manufacturer of Green Tea Fat Burner and several other weight-loss supplements, agreed to pay a $2.65 million settlement in February 2011.

The settlement resolved a lawsuit accusing the company of violating Proposition 65, a California law requiring warning labels on products containing over 1-microgram of lead. Laboratory tests showed that Green Tea Fat Burner contained 14-times the legal limit.

The lawsuit accused Irwin Naturals of:

“…engaging in false and misleading advertising of certain dietary supplement products in violation of Proposition 65, which requires a warning label on products that expose the consumer to over half a microgram of lead per day.”

After the settlement, Irwin Naturals agreed to reformulate their product. They are also required to place warning labels about lead levels when marketing products in California.

Green Tea Fat Burner and Liver Damage

Green Tea Fat Burner is marketed as a weight-loss supplement that contains extract of the green tea plant, a substance known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). The label indicates that Green Tea Fat Burner contains 400-mg of green tea extract (50% EGCG).

Green tea has been consumed for centuries in Asia for its health benefits. While it is true that normal doses of green tea have antioxidant effects, numerous studies have linked high doses of green tea extract with pro-oxidant effects and liver damage.

In 2009, a study linked EGCG supplements with 34 cases of hepatitis (liver inflammation), including one death. Another study described a case of severe liver damage in a woman who took SlimQuick, a weight-loss supplement containing 135-mg of EGCG.
