June 3, 2025 — Health officials are warning about an E. coli risk from Organic Rancher Ground Beef from Whole Foods stores nationwide and other retailers.
No recall was requested because the products are no longer available for purchase, but people who bought the ground beef may still have this product in their refrigerators or freezers.
No illnesses were reported, but the ground beef products tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).
The E. coli risk involves 1-pound vacuum-sealed packages of “Organic Rancher® Organic Ground Beef (85% LEAN 15% FAT) with “Use or Freeze By 06-19-25” and “Use or Freeze By 06-20-25.”
These raw ground beef items were produced on May 22, 2025 and May 23, 2025. The 1-lb. packages contain organic raw ground beef with “Product of Australia or Uruguay” on the label.
These products have establishment number “EST. 4027” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
They were shipped to distributor locations in Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland, and further distributed to Whole Foods Market retail locations nationwide, according to the recall.
Infections with E. coli O157:H7 can cause a serious, life-threatening illness. This strain of E. coli produces Shiga-toxin, which may cause serious gastrointestinal symptoms, or complications like dehydration due to extreme nausea and vomiting for several days.
According to the USDA:
“While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults.”
