January 16, 2023 — A woman from Ohio who developed endometrial cancer filed a hair relaxer lawsuit against L’Oreal and other beauty companies.
The lawsuit was filed by Alicia S., a woman from Euclid, Ohio, who said she started to use hair relaxers in 1989, when she was just 13 years old. She was never warned about the risk of cancer.
She was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2019, which is the most common type of uterine cancer.
She blames her cancer on exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in hair relaxers.
According to her lawsuit, these dangerous chemicals can enter the body through sores on the scalp during the hair relaxing treatment.
Once inside the body, chemicals like phthalates may mimic hormones and influence hormone-sensitive health issues, such as uterine cancer, fibroids, and endometriosis.
She stopped using hair relaxers in 2020, after using the products for more than 30 years. Those products included Dark & Lovely, Motions, and Designer Touch.
Her lawsuit was filed against L’Oreal, SoftSheen-Carson Inc., Strength of Nature LLC, Godrej Consumer Products, and Luster Inc.
The Hair Relaxer Lawsuit was filed on January 10, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio (Eastern Division) — Case Number 1:23-cv-00048-CAB.
