UPDATE: Fresh Location Protein Snack Tray & Trail Mix Recalled for Listeria Risk
On January 7, 2020, Fresh Location issued a recall for Protein Snack Trays and Protein Trail Mix due to a risk of Listeria in the hard-boiled egg ingredients. The recalled snacks could have been delivered to convenience stores, micro markets, hospitals, hotels and vending machines in Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana, and Mississippi.
Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to Hard-Boiled Eggs
In December 2019, the CDC issued a warning after a deadly outbreak of Listeria was linked to bulk hard-boiled eggs from Almark Foods.
Is There a Recall?
Yes. On December 23, Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia, expanded a recall to include all products from its facility in Gainesville, Georgia due to a risk of Listeria contamination.
The recall was issued after FDA tests in the facility were positive for the same strain of Listeria that infected at least 7 people, according to health officials.
How Many People Are Sick?
Illnesses were reported in 5 states: Texas (2), South Carolina (2), Pennsylvania (1), Maine (1), and Florida (1). Four of the victims were hospitalized due to severe illness. One death was reported in Texas.
Outbreak Information
The hard-boiled eggs were sold in major grocery stores in over 80 different products, including Trader Joe’s Egg Salad and many more.
Almark Foods also recalled bulk, fresh, pre-peeled, hard-boiled eggs that were sold in plastic pails of various sizes. The bulk eggs were sold to restaurants, food processors, and other food-service operations for use in items like deviled eggs, egg salad, and other salads containing hard-boiled eggs. The eggs have a 49-day shelf-life, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.
What Egg Products Were Recalled?
Dozens of products sold at Meijer, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Costco, Giant Eagle, and other grocery stores have been recalled because they contain recalled hard-boiled eggs. A list of recalled products can be found on the FDA website.
The recalled products were sold under brand-names such as 7 Select, Almark Foods, Best Choice, CMI, Dairy Fresh, Diebergs Market, Deb-El, Egggs Select, Egglands Best, Everyday Essentials, Farmers Hen House, Food Club, Fresh Thyme, Giant Eagle, Great American Deli, Great Day, Inspired Organics, Kirkland Signautre, Kroger, LIDL, Lucerne, Members Mark, Naturally Better, Nellie’s, Nic’s, O Organics, Peckish, Pete & Gerry’s, Rainbow Farms, Rembrandt Foods, ShopRite, Simple Truth Organics, Sunshine, Sutherland’s Food Service, Trader Joe’s, Vital Farms, Wild Harvest, and more.

Bacon & Egg Cheesewich Recall
On January 2, 2020, the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service issued a Public Health Alert because the following product contains hard-boiled eggs that were recalled due to Listeria:
- 3.6-oz. plastic packages containing “CHEESEWICH Ready to Eat BACON N EGGS” with “USE BY” dates 12/27/19, 1/3/20, 1/23/20, 1/30/20, 2/6/20, 2/14/20, 2/19/20 and 2/28/20 and lot codes 281191, 302191, 309191, 316191, 323191, 331191, 336191, 344191.
The products contain separately packaged bacon and hard-boiled eggs. Packages bear establishment number “P-45031” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
MiniMeal2Go Recalled at Meijer for Listeria Risk
On December 31, 2019, FiveStar Gourmet Foods voluntarily recalled two snack items that contain hard-boiled eggs that were recalled by Almark Foods. The recall involves MiniMeal2Go® ProteinPack (8.25oz) and MiniMeal2Go® Avocado Toast (6.75oz.). No illnesses were reported. The MiniMeal2Go products were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin in Meijer supermarkets only.
Meijer Recalls Diced Hard-Boiled Eggs in Grand Rapids, Michigan
On December 31, 2019, Meijer recalled hard-boiled eggs that were used on 2 salad bars at 2 stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan because the eggs were supplied by Almark Foods. The recalled eggs were sold between October 25, 2019 and December 23, 2019 at two stores:
- The Knapps Corner Meijer at 1997 East Beltline Road
- The Rockford Meijer at 2799 10 Mile Road NE in Rockford, Mich.
Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria infections are more likely to cause death or life-threatening complications in pregnant women, people on dialysis, people with cancer, and adults over 65 years old.
The early symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever and muscle aches. These symptoms can appear on the same day of eating contaminated food, or up to 70 days later, but usually within 1 to 4 weeks, according to the CDC.
