What is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a common virus that causes liver inflammation. It spreads in human feces and person-to-person contact. The symptoms can take 15-50 days to appear and cause an illness that lasts several months.

What Causes Outbreaks of Hepatitis A?

Large outbreaks are rare in the United States, but they tend to occur in two ways:

  • Food contaminated by sewage: Food that is imported to the United States and/or contaminated with raw sewage can cause massive outbreaks. These outbreaks often occur when dirty water is sprayed on food that is eaten uncooked.
  • Food workers: Outbreaks can occur when food-handlers who are infected with hepatitis A do not wash their hands after using the bathroom and prepare food that is eaten uncooked.

Preventing Hepatitis A Infection After Exposure

  • Hepatitis A Vaccine: If given within 2 weeks of exposure, the vaccine can help prevent infection. A booster shot is needed 6 months later for long-lasting protection.
  • Immune Globulin (IG) Shot: This shot of antibodies destroys the hepatitis A virus and can prevent infection in 85% of patients if given within 2 weeks of exposure.

Can I Join a Class Action Lawsuit?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. In recent years, many class actions have been filed after large outbreaks of Hepatitis A were linked to frozen berries.

If you or your loved one got sick, we may be able to help you file a lawsuit. These lawsuits typically seek financial compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost income due to time off work, long-term symptoms, or the wrongful death of a family member.

About Class Actions

Class actions lawsuits are often filed for everyone who was exposed to hepatitis A after an outbreak. They seek compensation for thousands of people who needed a vaccine, Immune Globulin shot, or check-ups.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Class actions have disadvantages for people who were actually infected with hepatitis A. They are often much more seriously injured than the average class action member — especially victims who are hospitalized or experience months of symptoms.

This is why individual lawsuits are usually filed for people with hepatitis A. They get their own lawyer who specializes in maximizing compensation for their pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost income, long-term injuries, and more.
