Hernia Mesh Infections

Hernia mesh becomes infected after surgery in 1-8% of patients, on average, but some types of mesh have higher risks than others. Biological meshes that are absorbed into the body are more resistant to infections than synthetic polypropylene (plastic-like) and polyester hernia mesh products.

Physiomesh Infection Lawsuit

In April 2016, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a man from Illinois who developed an infection, two abdominal abscesses, and an intestinal fistula when his Ethicon Physiomesh implant became infected. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois — In RE: Matthew Huff v. Ethicon Inc.Case No. 3:16-cv-00368.

Atrium C-QUR Mesh Infection Lawsuit

In October 2016, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a woman from Georgia who developed a major MRSA infection after being implanted with C-QUR Mesh. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia — In RE: Theresa Callaway v. Atrium Medical CorporationCase No. 1:16-cv-04068.

Most Infectious Hernia Mesh?

Atrium C-QUR Mesh is coated in omega-3 (fish oil gel). In 2013, a clinical trial had to be abandoned early due to unacceptably high rates of infections. The preliminary results were never published. In another study, 144 rats were implanted with 8 types of hernia mesh — 15 out of 16 rats with C-QUR developed infections, more than all the other mesh combined.

Mesh Infection Symptoms

Mesh infection symptoms usually appear within a few weeks. In rare cases, symptoms are delayed several years. Patients usually experience inflammation, pain, skin redness, tenderness, swelling, and warmth near the mesh. Infections may also cause symptoms in other parts of the body, such as fever, fatigue, chills, or muscle aches.

Mesh Infection Complications

  • Surgery to remove mesh
  • Chronic pain
  • Delayed healing
  • Mesh rejection or migration
  • Hernia recurrence
  • Organ damage
  • Abdominal abscess
  • Peritonitis
  • Intestinal fistula
  • Adhesions (scar-like tissue growth)
  • Sepsis
  • Death

MRSA Infected Hernia Mesh

Antibiotic treatment should include coverage for Staphylococcal bacteria, especially the methicillin-resistant type that causes MRSA. In one study of hernia mesh infections, 63% of patients were infected with MRSA. These infections are extremely hard to treat.

Infected Mesh Treatment

Hernia mesh infections must be treated with a combination of I.V. antibiotics and surgery. Antibiotics alone do not work because the bacterial colony creates a “biofilm” on the surface of the mesh that cannot be penetrated by the antibiotic.

Removal of Infected Hernia Mesh

Multiple surgeries are necessary to remove infected hernia mesh, treat the infection, and implant a new patch to plug the hernia. In severe cases, infections destroy tissues and create very large hernias. It may not be possible to close the hernia permanently.
