January 13, 2017 — Actress Jessica Alba’s Honest Co. is recalling organic baby powder because it may cause skin or eye infections due to bacterial contamination.
The product is advertised as an “extra gentle natural dusting powder with probiotics.”
Probiotics are live bacteria or yeasts that are advertised as having health benefits, but there is not much evidence they actually work. Certain types of bacteria are known to be harmful.
Honest Co. co-founder Christopher Gavigan went on YouTube to explain that routine tests detected harmful bacteria that can cause infections.
Consumers should return it to the store for a full refund. The recalled organic baby powder was sold in 4-oz containers with UPC #817810014529. It has been in stores since April 14, 2016.
Honest Co. built a $1.7 billion empire in just six years with Jessica Alba as the face of a new eco-conscious consumer product brand.
However, not everyone has been happy with their purchases. Honest Co. re-formulated sunscreen after consumers said they got horrible sunburns. An investigation found that it contained only 9% zinc oxide, when the standard is between 18-25%.
Honest also re-formulated its laundry detergent and other products last year after an investigation by the Wall Street Journal found sodium-lauryl sulfate (SLS) — a chemical the company promised never to use because it causes skin irritation.
