Hotel Sex Trafficking MDL
In January 2024, lawyers asked federal judges to consolidate sex trafficking lawsuits into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which would coordinate around 1,700 lawsuits nationwide into a single federal court, under one judge. The MDL is: IN RE: Hotel Industry Sex Trafficking Litigation (No. II).
What Happened?
Judges rejected a previous request for MDL centralization back in early 2020, but there were only a few dozen lawsuits at that time. Over the past few years, the litigation has grown significantly, with more than 1,000 lawsuits now filed.
All of these lawsuits accuse major hotel chains, including Hilton, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Red Roof Inns, Best Western International, and other companies of profiting from sex trafficking.
According to the lawsuits:
“Plaintiffs in all actions allege that they are victims of sex trafficking that occurred at hotel properties located across the country and that the involved hotel defendants are liable for damages under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 (“TVPRA”), 18 U.S.C. § 1595, and, in some instances, state law.”
Lawsuits Cite Federal Law Against Sex Trafficking
These sex trafficking lawsuits against the hotels cite the federal Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, which allows sex trafficking victims to sue anyone who knowingly benefits from their exploitation.
Can I Join a Class Action Lawsuit?
The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. We are investigating individual lawsuits against hotels for sex trafficking survivors. If you believe you qualify, we may be able to help you file a lawsuit and seek compensation against the hotel or motel.
About Class Action Lawsuits
Class action lawsuits are ideal when a lot of people are seeking a similar legal remedy, such as a refund for a product that did not work as advertised. However, class actions can have disadvantages for people with severe injuries. For example, everyone who joins a class action typically gets to share in the payout from a settlement.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits
Our law firm is filing individual lawsuits so that we can focus on helping the survivors of sex trafficking seek compensation and justice from the criminals who are responsible.
There is no excuse for companies who turn a blind eye to sex trafficking, allow the exploitation of women and children, or profit by failing to take basic steps to prevent sex trafficking.
If you or a loved one is a survivor of sex trafficking, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit and seek compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, mental health, lost income, and more.
