Firefighters responded to the fire immediately and were successful in preventing it from spreading any further. About 4,000 firefighters responded to the Hughes Fire, dropping water and fire retardant from the air, and using hand tools and hoses at ground-level.

National Weather Service Announces “Red Flag” Fire Hazard
The National Weather Service announced a “Red Flag” warning in the area. This is the highest warning level for fire hazards, due to the combination of fierce winds and very dry conditions on the ground.
According to the warning:
“Dangerous fire weather conditions will persist through Friday as fuels remain extremely dry and ready to burn, with Thursday the period of greatest concern. Any fire that starts can grow fast and out of control. Have a plan, especially if you are in a high fire risk area.”
Windblown Smoke and Ash
Smoke, ash, and windblown dust from the wildfires in Los Angeles has caused poor air quality and health hazards. According to Los Angeles County Public Health: “Ash, dust and debris (particularly from burned buildings) may contain toxic and cancer-causing chemicals, including asbestos, arsenic, and lead.” The ash from wildfires is relatively non-toxic, but it can irritate, skin, eyes, nose, and throat.
There have been safety advisories for parts of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernadino, as well as Ventura County for the cities of Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Oxnard, Piru, Santa Paula, Simi Valley and Ventura.
