Hydroxycut was recalled in 2009 after causing dozens of serious liver injuries. After it was reformulated, it was again promoted as a “miracle” weight-loss cure. Unfortunately, cases of liver damage continue to be reported.

Hydroxycut and Liver Failure
Hydroxycut is one of the most popular weight-loss supplements on the market, sold at major retailers like GNC. Unfortunately, in May 2009 it was pulled off the market after the FDA received nearly two dozen reports of severe liver injury:
“The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. One death due to liver failure has been reported to the FDA.”
Hydroxycut was also linked to non-liver injuries, such as seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and a serious type of muscle damage known as rhabdomyolysis that can lead to kidney failure.
Hydroxycut Ingredients
Hydroxycut has re-entered the market with an all-new formula that is promoted as “non-stimulant.” The ingredients in Hydroxycut SX-7 include 650-mg of Super Xtreme SX-7 Complex, a proprietary blend of the following active ingredients:
- Green Coffee Blend (400-mg extract of Coffea canephora robusta)
- Ashwagandha root extract
- Rhodiola root extract
- Yacon root
- Oregano leaf extract
- Blue Ginseng leaf extract
- Wakame leaf extract
What is the problem?
Hydroxycut contains highly-concentrated extracts of several herbs. Unfortunately, herbs that are beneficial in normal doses can become dangerous or even deadly when the active ingredients are extracted and sold in a weight-loss supplement.
The FDA does not test weight-loss supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. Even when safety problems are discovered, it often takes many months for the products to actually be taken off the market — and only after people are injured.
Green Tea Extract in Hydroxycut Linked to Heart Problem
In June 2010, the Journal of Pharmacy Practice published a case report of atrial fibrillation, a serious heart rhythm disorder, in a 63 year-old woman who used Hydroxycut. Doctors blamed her condition on green tea extract, also known as Epigallocatechin (EGCG).
Side Effects
Symptoms of liver damage may include brown urine, light-colored stools, stomach pain, itching, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and confusion. Some side effects Hydroxycut users may experience include:
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Liver damage
- Liver failure
- Need for liver transplant
- Seizures
- Heart problems
- Kidney failure
- Death
