Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats and Cheeses

Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats and Cheeses

May 17, 2019 — At least 8 people have been infected with Listeria in a deadly multi-state outbreak linked to deli meats and cheeses.

All 8 people were hospitalized due to severe food poisoning, including 1 person from Michigan who died. Illnesses have been reported in Michigan (2), New Jersey (1), New York (2), and Pennsylvania (3).

The first illnesses were reported in November 2018. The most recent illness was reported in March 2019.

Health officials discovered the same strain of Listeria in this outbreak in deli-sliced meat and deli counters at several stores in New York and Rhode Island.

However, no recalls have been issued at this time because no single, common supplier of deli products has been identified.

CDC Reminds High-Risk People to Avoid Deli Meats and Cheeses

Deli-sliced meats and cheeses are one of the top foods the CDC recommends avoiding for high-risk people who are most susceptible to Listeria infections:

“Pregnant women and their newborns, adults age 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get sick with listeriosis.”

What is the Risk?

Infections with Listeria monocytogenes can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, and other symptoms. Pregnant women who become infected may have no symptoms, but suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infection of the newborn baby. Listeria infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and other people with weakened immune systems can very serious and sometimes fatal.
