iHEAT Insoles: Burn Victims Seeking Legal Action

A growing number of consumers have reported severe burn injuries after using iHEAT Heated Insoles. These alarming incidents involved the batteries overheating, exploding, or catching on fire in the person’s shoes or boots — leading to severe burns, scarring and disfigurement.

Report: Man Suffers 3rd-Degree Burns When iHEAT Heated Insoles Explode

In December 2021, a man from Minnesota named Tyler Morris suffered extreme 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns when his iHEAT Heated Insoles exploded inside his boot.

What Happened?

Morris said he bought iHEAT Heated Insoles from Amazon.com to use for hunting and fishing. One year later, he noticed that one of the insoles was not working, but he kept using it in his boot for comfort.

Then without warning, while the insoles were turned off, one of the insoles suddenly exploded. He told local news KARE 11: “It felt like a knife stabbing my heel. … Smoke started billowing out of my boot, and I had to kick it off as fast as I could.”

Hospitals Seeing More Victims With Burn Injuries

Doctors at the Hennepin Healthcare Burn Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota said they have treated three patients with severe burn injuries from battery-powered heated clothing since the beginning of the winter season in 2024. Doctors are warning people to “stay away from” these products:

“We’ve had three patients since the beginning of winter already come in with varying degrees of burns on the lower extremities from 1st to 3rd-degree, and it is from these insoles malfunctioning or even exploding. Our medical staff was kind of shocked.”

How Do Heated Insoles Work?

Heated insoles and other types of battery-powered heated clothing (such as heated socks, vests, gloves, etc.) are becoming very popular items for people who spend a lot of time working or recreating outdoors.

Advantages of Heated Insoles in Freezing Temperatures

Heated insoles are advertised as a way to prevent numb toes in freezing temperatures. They are commonly used in winter weather conditions by deer hunters, fishermen, and people who ski, snowshoe, or play other outdoor sports. They are also used by people with certain medical conditions that cause cold feet due to poor circulation.

Other Features of Battery-Powered Heated Insoles

Heated insoles are rechargeable devices that are powered by a lithium-ion battery. The battery may be built into the insole, or a removable battery pack that slips in a pocket. There are usually adjustable temperature settings on heated insoles, which may be controlled with a remote control or smartphone app.

What is the Problem?

Lithium-ion batteries pack a lot of power into a small size, making them ideal for electronic devices — but this advantage comes with a serious risk of battery fires, explosions, and overheating.

Lithium-ion batteries contain highly-flammable chemicals, and when they explode, the fire burns extremely hot. This is a serious safety hazard when the battery explodes in clothing (such as heated insoles or socks), which are directly up against the skin.

Lithium-ion battery fires are also likely to burn or melt other clothing a person is wearing, which can almost instantly cause full-thickness 3rd-degree burns and severe scarring.
