IKEA Recalls Bowls, Plates & Mugs for Burn Hazard
On May 19, 2021, IKEA recalled about 148,000 bowls, plates, and mugs due to a burn injury hazard.
What is the Problem?
The recalled dinnerware was made from renewable plastic that can become brittle and break, causing burn injuries when hot food or liquid leaks out, according to IKEA.
How Many People Were Injured?
IKEA reported 123 incidents of breakage worldwide, including 4 people who were injured. Two people needed medical attention. Most people suffered burns due to hot food or liquid.
What Products Were Recalled?
IKEA recalled “HEROISK” and “TALRIKA” bowls, plates, and mugs that are manufactured from a type of renewable plastic called PLA (Polylactic acid or polylactide).
The items came in a variety of colors, including yellow, pink, or blue. The name “HEROISK” or “TALRIKA”, supplier number 23348, “Made in Taiwan” and “PLA” are molded on the bottom of each item.
The items were sold nationwide at IKEA and online at www.ikea-usa.com from August 2019 to May 2021 for between $4 and $12. Consumers can return them to any IKEA store for a full refund.
