Ikea Glass Tables Shatter Spontaneously
One of the most recent incidents happened to a family in Ohio — an IKEA Glasholm glass-top desk “exploded” in a teenage boy’s bedroom. According to his mother, Holly Burns:
“I was cooking dinner, when I heard a big sound like a big boom, and my first thought was a tree had fallen into the house, that’s how loud it was.”
Over 12+ Complaints of Exploding IKEA Glass Tables
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received more than a dozen complaints about IKEA glass tables and desks exploding or shattering without warnings.
Several victims have posted videos of the aftermath on YouTube. In another incident in the U.K., a 25 year-old woman heard a “massive bang…like a gunshot” when her IKEA Salmi table spontaneously exploded as her toddler son played nearby.
What is the problem?
IKEA said their glass tables are “tested rigorously to meet the highest standards,” but admitted that the tempered glass may not be durable:
“Over time, small knocks and fractures can affect the durability of tempered glass. We understand the experience of the glass breaking can be distressing. However tempered glass is designed to shatter to minimize risk of injury.”
Spontaneous Glass Explosions
Tempered glass shatters very dramatically. Traditional “plate glass” breaks into large, sharp pieces. Tempered glass is less likely to cut people compared to plate glass because the broken pieces are round.
Spontaneous glass explosions occur when tempered glass breaks without any apparent reason. The most common causes are:
- Minor damage, such as chipped edges that develop into larger breaks
- Bending of the glass in the frame, causing stresses to develop as the glass expands and contracts due to temperature changes, or window deflection due to wind
- Internal defects in the glass such as nickel sulfide inclusions
- Thermal stresses in the glass (excessive hot or cold temperatures)
- Inadequate glass thickness to resist weight of objects or wind
