Dozens of lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured by Invokamet side effects like ketoacidosis and kidney failure. However, these cases are not part of a class action. Instead, they have been centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in New Jersey.

UPDATE: Invokamet Lawsuits Centralized in New Jersey
In December 2016, federal judges centralized all lawsuits involving side effects of Invokamet into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2750) in the U.S. District Court for New Jersey under Judge Brian R. Martinotti.
What is Invokamet?
Invokamet is a combination of canagliflozin (Invokana) with metformin, which has been the first-line treatment for diabetes for decades. The FDA has also approved an extended-release version, called Invokamet XR.
Invokamet and Ketoacidosis
The FDA is concerned that canagliflozin may increase a user’s risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Metformin is also associated with a condition called lactic acidosis. Invokamet patients who develop either of these conditions may need to be hospitalized. In a Safety Communication, the FDA recommended that patients pay close attention for symptoms of ketoacidosis and seek medical attention immediately if they experience difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, and unusual fatigue or sleepiness.
Invokamet and Amputations
In May 2016, the FDA began investigating a clinical trial linking Invokamet to a doubled risk of leg, foot, and toe amputations. The problem is that Invokamet often causes dehydration, which exacerbates circulation problems in the lower legs. In May 2017, the FDA ordered drug-makers to add a “Black Box” label to warn that patients on Invokana are twice as likely to require a foot or leg amputation. The risk is approximately 7 in 1,000 patients on Invokana.
What is the problem?
The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not filing an Invokamet class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of people who were severely injured by side effects of Invokamet, such as:
- Amputations
- Bone fractures
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Kidney infections
- Kidney failure
- Urinary tract infections
- Pyelonephritis
- Urosepsis
- Fournier’s gangrene (necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum)
About Class Actions
There is a good chance you have heard of class action lawsuits involving thousands of people with the same legal claim. Class actions are a good way for a lot of people to seek justice in some circumstances — for example, reimbursement for people who bought a defective product.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to an Invokamet Class Action
The problem with class actions is that they can have disadvantages for individual plaintiffs with the most severe injuries. In some cases, class action lawyers accept a “low-ball” settlement and divide the remainder among everyone in the class action.
Instead of a class action, our attorneys file individual lawsuits. We believe everyone who was severely injured by Invokamet deserves a legal representative who is committed to their case. If you decide to file a lawsuit, you could receive compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost income, disability, and more.
