May 21, 2024 — Irvington Seafood has recalled packages of crab meat that may be contaminated with Listeria.
The recall involves 1-lb. tubs of “Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw Meat.” The package is marked with license number AL 111-C with the company name “Irvington Seafood.”
No illnesses were reported, but the company said that a batch of crab meat tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Out of 94 samples that were taken earlier this month, 12 samples of claw meat and 2 samples of fingers came back positive for Listeria, according to the recall notice.
The crab meat was sent to distributors in Alabama and Mississippi. It may have been sold at retail seafood markets or restaurants.
Irvington Seafood is urging customers who purchased 1-lb. packages of crab meat to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Infections with Listeria can be serious and sometimes fatal. According to the FDA:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
