What is the Problem?

IVC Filters are implanted in a vein called the Inferior Vena Cava to catch blood clots. If someone with an IVC filter experiences serious pain, it is possible the pain is caused by a malfunctioning IVC Filter.

There are many different complications with IVC filters can cause pain, so it is a good idea to talk to your doctor to investigate the problem. Pain is a symptom of these very serious complications:

  • Embedded filter
  • Perforation of the vein
  • Filter has tilted, moved out of position, or fractured
  • Broken filter
  • Organ damage
  • Blood clots clogging the filter
  • Blood clots in the lungs
  • Circulation problems
  • Heart problems or irregular heartbeat
  • And more

Pain Caused by Malfunctioning IVC Filters

Patients do not always experience symptoms when their IVC Filters malfunction. In fact, one of the most common complications is a vein perforation, and patients typically do not experience pain unless the IVC Filter has also punctured into a nearby organ.

Stomach Pain

Stomach pain or abdominal pain — especially if it occurs when a person with an IVC Filter moves in a particular way — is a symptom that should not be ignored. The person needs to see a doctor right away to determine if the IVC Filter has punctured into nearby organs.

Back Pain

IVC Filters can also cause back pain. This is sometimes a sign that the needle-like wire legs of an IVC Filter have punctured through the vein and they are poking into internal organs or other parts of the body. Back pain is also a symptom of an IVC Filter that has broken, and the broken pieces have traveled to another part of the body.

Heart Attack

In some cases, the pain from a malfunctioning IVC Filter can be so severe that the person feels like they are having a heart attack. This is often the case when the filter has migrated to the heart. The entire filter sometimes moves into the heart, but more commonly, parts of the filter break off and travel in the bloodstream until they hit the heart. T

In addition to pain, there can be other serious symptoms, such as coughing up blood, swelling, shortness of breath, or loss of consciousness. These are signs of a medical emergency that needs to be evaluated by a doctor immediately.

Pain in the Legs

IVC Filters are designed to trap blood clots, but in some cases, the filter becomes clogged with blood clots. This can slow down circulation and cause pain in the legs, in a condition known as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It can cause extreme pain, swelling, and permanent problems with poor circulation and blood clots in the legs.
