December 23, 2014 — Keurig Green Mountain, Inc., has issued a recall for over 7.1 million MINI Plus Brewing Systems after receiving 200 reports of hot water spraying out of the unit, resulting in 90 burn injuries.
The problem is that water in the unit can overheat and spray out of the unit.
The recalled units can be identified with the model number “K10.” On the bottom of the unit, there is an identification number starting with “31.” The units were manufactured and sold between December 2009 and July 2014 at stores including Kmart, Kohl’s, Target, and Walmart for about $100.
Keurig has asked customers to contact them for a free repair kit or visit their website for more information.
In the meantime, Keurig says customers can still use their brewer, but beware:
“We recommend you avoid brewing more than two cups in rapid succession and maintain an arm’s length distance from the brewer during the brewing process.”
The majority of the units were sold in the United States, but 574,000 were sold in Canada. Health Canada has reported 25 incidents involving hot water spraying out of the brewer, resulting in 17 minor burns.
